What steps should I take with a Broken Boiler

We specialise in Plumbing and Heating Systems at DHAP, based in Swords and servicing the surrounding area. If you have a broken gas boiler, it can be a stressful and inconvenient situation. However, there are some steps you can take to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible.

Key steps to resolve a Broken Boiler

Turn off the gas supply.

If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, the first and most important step is to turn off the gas supply to the boiler. Gas leaks can be extremely dangerous and pose a severe health and safety risk. Therefore, do not attempt to fix the problem if you suspect a gas leak. Instead, call a qualified gas engineer immediately and wait outside until they arrive. Doyle Heating and Plumbing operate an emergency call-out service—phone Tom at 087 027 6421 for a free consultation.

To turn off the gas supply, locate the gas valve on the gas supply pipe that leads to your boiler. This valve is usually found near the gas meter or near the boiler. Turn the valve 90 degrees so that it is perpendicular to the pipe. This will shut off the gas supply to the boiler.

Check the boiler display panel.

If there is no gas leak and the boiler has stopped working, the next step is to check the boiler display panel for any error codes or warning messages. Many modern gas boilers have built-in diagnostic systems that can help you identify the cause of the problem.

If an error code or warning message is displayed on the panel, consult the manufacturer’s manual to determine the cause of the problem and any steps you can take to fix your broken boiler.

Check the boiler pressure.

If there are no error codes or warning messages on the display panel, the next step is to check the boiler pressure. Low boiler pressure is a common cause of boiler breakdowns and can be quickly resolved.

To check the boiler pressure, locate the pressure gauge on the boiler. This is usually located on the front panel and looks like a small clock face. The pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar. If the pressure is too low, you will need to top up the system.

To top up the system, locate the filling loop on the boiler. This is usually a flexible metal hose with a valve at each end. Open both valves to allow water to flow into the system. Watch the pressure gauge and stop filling the system when the pressure reaches the desired level.

Reset the boiler

If the boiler has stopped working and there are no error codes or warning messages on the display panel, the next step is to try resetting the boiler. This can sometimes resolve minor issues and get the boiler working again.

To reset the boiler, locate the reset button on the boiler. This is usually a small red or black button located on the front panel. Press the button and hold it down for 5-10 seconds. Release the button and wait for the boiler to restart. This can take a few minutes, so be patient.

Call a qualified heating engineer.

If you have tried all of the above steps and the boiler is still not working, it’s time to call a qualified heating engineer. Phone Tom on 087 027 6421 for more information. Do not attempt to fix the boiler yourself, as this can be dangerous and may cause further damage to the boiler.

Doyle Heating and Plumbing are Gas Safe registered and operates an EMERGENCY CALL-OUT SERVICE.

When you call the engineer, explain the problem you are experiencing and provide as much detail as possible. This will help the engineer diagnose the problem and bring any necessary tools or parts with them when they visit.
